What is Migraine?

Migraine is a complex neurological disorder characterised by recurrent episodes of severe, often unilateral (one-sided) throbbing headache accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. It affects approximately 15% of the global population — over one billion people — making it one of the most prevalent disabling conditions worldwide.

Women are affected approximately three times more than men, primarily due to hormonal influences of oestrogen and progesterone on the trigeminovascular system. Approximately 20% of migraineurs experience an aura — a set of transient neurological symptoms (most commonly visual disturbances) preceding or accompanying the headache phase.

The underlying mechanism involves cortical spreading depression, trigeminovascular activation and the release of vasoactive neuropeptides including calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), causing neurogenic inflammation of meningeal blood vessels and the intense pain characteristic of migraine.

Types of Headache

Migraine with Aura (Classic)

Preceded by neurological aura symptoms lasting 20–60 minutes; most commonly visual (zigzag lines, scotoma, flashing lights) but can include sensory, motor or speech disturbances.

Migraine without Aura (Common)

The most frequent type (80% of migraines); no preceding aura. Moderate to severe unilateral throbbing pain lasting 4–72 hours with nausea and photophobia.

Cluster Headache

Excruciatingly severe, unilateral periorbital pain lasting 15–180 minutes; occurs in clusters of 1–8 per day over weeks. More common in men. Associated with autonomic features (tearing, nasal congestion).

Tension-Type Headache

Bilateral, pressing or tightening pain of mild to moderate intensity; no nausea or vomiting. The most common primary headache disorder; triggered by stress, posture and muscle tension.

Chronic Daily Headache

Headache on 15 or more days per month for more than 3 months. Often a result of medication overuse (rebound headache) or transformation of episodic migraine. Particularly well-suited to constitutional homeopathic treatment.

Migraine Triggers

Identifying and avoiding personal triggers is a critical component of migraine management. Common triggers include:

Hormonal & Physiological

  • Hormonal changes around menstruation (menstrual migraine)
  • Oral contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapy
  • Pregnancy and postpartum hormonal shifts
  • Sleep disruption — both too little and too much
  • Skipping meals and prolonged fasting
  • Dehydration

Environmental & Dietary

  • Bright lights, flickering screens and sunlight glare
  • Loud noises and strong smells
  • Barometric pressure changes and weather shifts
  • Tyramine-rich foods: aged cheese, red wine, pickled or cured meats
  • Caffeine excess or withdrawal
  • Monosodium glutamate (MSG) in processed foods
  • Chocolate
  • Psychological stress and emotional upset

Symptoms & Phases of Migraine

A migraine attack classically progresses through four phases:

1. Prodrome

Hours to days before: mood changes (depression or euphoria), food cravings, neck stiffness, increased urination, yawning.

2. Aura

Visual: zigzag lines, flickering lights, blind spots. Sensory: tingling or numbness spreading up the arm. Speech problems. Lasts 20–60 min.

3. Attack

Throbbing, pulsating pain (4–72 hours), usually one-sided. Severe nausea or vomiting. Extreme sensitivity to light (photophobia) and sound (phonophobia).

4. Postdrome

After the pain subsides: fatigue, cognitive fog (“migraine hangover”), mood changes. Can last up to 24 hours.

Homeopathic Approach to Migraine

The homeopathic approach to migraine is fundamentally different from conventional treatment, which primarily focuses on aborting acute attacks (triptans, NSAIDs) or suppressing attack frequency (prophylactics such as beta-blockers, anticonvulsants or antidepressants). While effective for many, conventional medications carry significant side effects and — in the case of analgesics used too frequently — can cause medication overuse headache (MOH), paradoxically worsening the very problem they treat.

Homeopathic constitutional treatment aims to:

  • Identify the individual constitutional type — the unique combination of physical, mental and emotional characteristics that predispose the patient to migraine
  • Address hormonal triggers — particularly in women with menstrual, perimenopausal or contraceptive-related migraine
  • Reduce attack frequency and intensity progressively over months of constitutional treatment
  • Eliminate rebound headache risk — homeopathic remedies do not cause medication overuse headache
  • Treat the whole person — including the anxiety, perfectionism, sleep disturbance or dietary habits that contribute to the migraine pattern

Homeopathic Remedies for Migraine

Spigelia

Left-sided headache with pain radiating around and through the eye. Neuralgic, stitching pain. Worse from motion, noise and touch. Pain better from lying quietly with head slightly raised. Associated with palpitations.
