What is Eczema?

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory skin disease marked by intense itching, redness, dryness and a disrupted skin barrier. It typically begins in infancy or early childhood and follows a waxing-and-waning course, with flares triggered by allergens, weather, stress and irritants.

The core defect is two-fold: a genetically weakened skin barrier (often involving filaggrin gene mutations) that loses moisture and admits allergens, and an over-reactive immune response that answers those allergens with inflammation. Scratching damages the barrier further, producing the notorious itch–scratch cycle that perpetuates the disease.

Eczema is the earliest step of the "atopic march" — many affected children later develop allergic rhinitis and asthma, underlining that the condition is a constitutional, whole-body tendency rather than a local skin problem.

Causes & Triggers

Predisposing Factors

  • Heredity: A parent with eczema, asthma or hay fever markedly raises the child's risk; both parents affected raises it further.
  • Skin barrier defect: Filaggrin deficiency causes dry, permeable skin that loses water and admits allergens and microbes.
  • Immune dysregulation: Th2-skewed responses with elevated IgE.

Common Flare Triggers

  • Soaps, detergents, woollen clothing and frequent hot bathing
  • Dry winter air and sudden temperature changes
  • Sweating and overheating
  • House-dust mites, pollen and pet dander
  • Foods in sensitised children — egg, milk, nuts, wheat
  • Emotional stress and lack of sleep
  • Secondary bacterial infection (Staph. aureus) of scratched skin

Signs & Symptoms

Typical Features

  • Intense itching โ€” the defining symptom, worse at night
  • Dry, rough skin (xerosis) over the whole body
  • Red, inflamed patches that may weep and crust when acute
  • Thickened, leathery skin (lichenification) from chronic scratching
  • Cracks and fissures, painful behind ears and on hands

Distribution by Age

  • Infants: Cheeks, scalp and outer surfaces of limbs
  • Children: Flexures โ€” elbow creases, behind knees, wrists, ankles, neck
  • Adults: Hands, eyelids, flexures; may be localised (hand eczema, nummular patches) or widespread

Epidemiology

Atopic dermatitis affects around 230 million people worldwide โ€” up to 20% of children and 3–10% of adults. Prevalence has doubled in recent decades in industrialised and urbanising regions. Roughly 60% of cases begin in the first year of life; many improve by adolescence, but a substantial minority persist or relapse in adulthood.

Homeopathic Treatment of Eczema

Conventional management suppresses inflammation locally with steroid creams; when stopped, the eruption frequently returns โ€” sometimes worse. Homeopathy regards eczema as an outward expression of an inner constitutional disturbance, and treats the person whose skin is affected, not the patch alone.

The homeopath studies the character of the eruption (dry or moist, crusted or fissured), its location and spread, what aggravates and relieves the itch, alternations with asthma or hay fever, food cravings, thermal state and emotional disposition. The matching constitutional remedy calms immune over-reactivity so the skin heals from within โ€” gently, without rebound flares.

Common prescribing categories:

  • Dry, itching, burning eczema: Sulphur, Psorinum, Arsenicum Album
  • Moist, oozing eruptions: Graphites, Petroleum, Mezereum
  • Eczema alternating with asthma: Sulphur, Natrum Sulph, Psorinum

Homeopathic Remedies for Eczema

Graphites

Moist eczema oozing a sticky, honey-like fluid; crusts in the bends of limbs, behind the ears and on the scalp. Cracks in fingertips and heels. Suited to stout, chilly, constipated constitutions.

Sulphur

Dry, scaly, unhealthy-looking skin with violent itching and burning; worse from warmth of bed and washing. Scratching relieves briefly then burns. History of eruptions suppressed by ointments. Standing keynote remedy of skin disease.

Petroleum

Eczema worse in winter; deep, bloody cracks on hands and fingertips that will not heal. Skin rough, thickened, dirty-looking. Itching at night. Herpetic eruptions on genitals and behind ears.

Mezereum

Thick, leathery crusts with pus beneath; scalp eczema with matted hair. Intolerable itching, worse in bed and from touch. Child scratches face raw. Eruptions after vaccination in sensitive constitutions.

Arsenicum Album

Dry, rough, scaly eruptions with burning relieved by warmth. Restless, anxious, fastidious patients, worse after midnight. Skin complaints alternating with asthma. Itching without visible eruption in the aged.

Psorinum

Unhealthy, dirty-looking greasy skin; eruptions in folds with intolerable itching, worse from warmth of bed. Despairs of recovery. Extreme chilliness โ€” wears warm clothing even in summer. Deep antipsoric for recurrent cases.

Rhus Toxicodendron

Vesicular eruptions with intense itching and burning, better from hot applications. Skin red, swollen, covered with small blisters. Restlessness drives constant change of position. Urticaria alternating with eczema.

Natrum Muriaticum

Eczema at the margins of the hairy scalp ("crusta lactea" band), in bends of joints and behind ears; raw, red and inflamed. Worse at the seashore and from sun. Reserved, grief-holding constitutions who reject consolation.
