Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, usually from viral or bacterial infection. It commonly causes sore throat, fever, and painful swallowing—especially in children. Supportive care plus timely medical review helps reduce complications and recurrence.

Definition

Tonsillitis is an inflammatory condition of the tonsils—two lymphatic tissues at the back of the throat— most often due to viral or bacterial infection. It is common in children and may present with fever and throat pain.

Causes

Usually viral or bacterial infections. Irritants and dietary patterns that aggravate the throat (very cold, oily, or spicy foods) may worsen discomfort in susceptible individuals.

Symptoms

  • Red, swollen tonsils; sometimes white patches or exudate.
  • Sore throat, painful swallowing, cough; possible fever.
  • Neck tenderness or swollen glands; voice changes in some cases.

Ayurvedic View

In Ayurveda, Tonsillitis relates to Galaāyu, often linked with impaired digestion and toxin build-up (āma). Supportive care may include herbs to soothe inflammation and individualized diet/lifestyle guidance aligned to one’s constitution, complementing clinical evaluation and treatment where indicated.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice

  • Hydrate well—warm teas with honey and clear soups are often soothing.
  • Avoid very spicy/acidic foods and extremely cold items during acute pain.
  • Rest the voice; minimize prolonged talking or shouting.
  • Avoid cigarette smoke and polluted air; prefer soft, easy-to-swallow foods.

Some Home Remedies

  • Gargle with lukewarm salt water (¼ tsp salt in ½ cup water), several times daily.
  • Mix equal parts powders of Mulethi (licorice), Vacha (sweet flag), and Kulanjan (galangal) with honey for throat soothing (use judiciously; consider age and allergies).
  • Warm compress/fomentation on the front of the neck 2–3 times daily may relieve discomfort.

Seek medical care urgently for breathing difficulty, drooling, severe asymmetrical pain, or dehydration.
