Stye (Hordeolum)

A stye is a tender, red bump at the eyelid margin—usually from a blocked and infected lash follicle or oil gland. Most resolve with warm compresses; seek care for persistent or complicated cases.

Overview

Styes commonly present with localized pain, redness, swelling, and a small pustule at the lash line. Risk factors include blepharitis (eyelid inflammation), poor lid hygiene, contact lens over‑wear, and cosmetic residue.

Seek urgent care if eyelid swelling spreads, there is fever, vision changes, severe pain, a hard non‑tender lump persists (possible chalazion), or if the stye recurs frequently.

Ayurvedic Perspective (Supportive)

Classical texts describe eye‑care under Netra and healthy ageing/support under Rasayana. Supportive measures focus on gentle cleansing, adequate rest, balanced diet, and avoiding irritants—used alongside modern ophthalmic care.

  • Favour light, warm, easy‑to‑digest meals; avoid very spicy, very oily, or late‑night heavy meals.
  • Practice regular routines and stress reduction to support balance of doshas.
  • Topical eye/herbal preparations should be used only under clinician guidance.

Ayurvedic measures are complementary. Antibiotics, lid procedures, or other treatments are guided by your eye‑care professional.

Home Care (Comfort & Hygiene)

  • Warm compresses: apply a clean, warm (not hot) compress to the closed eyelid for 10–15 minutes, 3–4 times daily.
  • Lid hygiene: gently cleanse lash line with diluted baby‑shampoo or a prescribed lid wipe; avoid eye makeup until resolved.
  • Do not squeeze or pop the stye. Avoid contact lenses until irritation fully settles.
  • Hand hygiene before touching around the eyes.

Avoid home instillation of oils/herbs into the eye without professional advice.
