Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious skin condition with rapid skin-cell turnover and scaly plaques. Ayurveda emphasizes cleansing, digestive balance, and supportive herbs alongside diet and regimen.

Definition

Psoriasis is a non-contagious common skin condition that causes rapid skin cell reproduction resulting in red, dry patches of thickened skin (plaques) with silvery scales. It commonly affects elbows, knees, and scalp.

Causes

Psoriasis may be associated with:

  • Heredity (higher risk when one or both parents are affected)
  • Combining “opposite” foods (e.g., fish with milk) in traditional view
  • Skin trauma (cuts, bruises, burns)
  • Certain medicines or irritants
  • Excess smoking and alcohol intake
  • Mental stress or psychological strain

Symptoms

  • Loose silvery scales; red, thickened plaques
  • Itching or burning sensations
  • Pus-filled bumps with surrounding redness (in some types)
  • Skin pain or inflammation; fissures or bleeding
  • Dry skin patches and blisters
  • Restricted joint motion (possible psoriatic arthritis)
  • Emotional distress

Ayurvedic View

Traditionally attributed to imbalances in Vata (Air) and Pitta (Fire) with toxin accumulation in deeper tissues (rasa, rakta, mansa, lasika). Care emphasizes cleansing, restoring digestion, and nourishing tissues to support skin healing.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice

  • Avoid “opposite foods” and items that trigger indigestion (traditional guidance).
  • Limit very salty, sour, or acidic foods.
  • Avoid cold baths immediately after heavy exertion or travel.
  • Don’t suppress natural urges (bowel, urine, etc.).
  • Avoid day-sleeping.
  • Traditionally avoid radish, sesame, jaggery (gur), curds, and fish taken together.

Some Home Remedies (Traditional)

  • Apply a decoction of soap nut (shikakai) to affected areas.
  • Cover affected area with a thin fresh banana leaf (as a soothing wrap).
  • Soak 15–20 sesame seeds (til) in water overnight; drink on an empty stomach in the morning.
  • Drink 1–2 cups of bitter gourd juice on an empty stomach in the morning for several months (lime can be added).

Note: Home measures are traditional and not a substitute for medical care. Seek urgent care for widespread rash, fever, infection, or joint pain/swelling.
