Osteoarthritis (Sandhivata)

Degenerative joint disease marked by cartilage breakdown, pain, and reduced mobility—commonly affecting hands and weight-bearing joints (knees, hips, feet, back). Ayurveda relates this to aggravated Vata Dosha in the joints.

Definition

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common forms of arthritis, characterized by the breakdown of joint cartilage—the cushion between bones. Cartilage loss leads to bones rubbing against each other, causing pain and reduced movement. Severity ranges from mild to severe and is more frequent in middle-aged and older adults, often involving hands, knees, hips, feet, and back.

Causes

  • Excessive consumption of dry, cold, or stale food.
  • Irregular sleep patterns.
  • Suppressing natural urges.
  • Exposure to severe cold and dry weather.
  • Excessive travel.
  • Mental trauma can contribute.

Symptoms

  • Edema (swelling).
  • Joint pain and tenderness.
  • Stiffness and pain on movement or work.

Ayurvedic View

In Ayurveda, Osteoarthritis is associated with aggravated Vata Dosha and is termed Sandhivata. When Vata increases within the joints (Sandhis), its dry and catabolic nature depletes synovial fluid and damages cartilage. Ayurvedic care aims to pacify Vata, prevent further degeneration, and rejuvenate joint tissues with targeted herbs and therapies for lubrication and strength.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice

  • Avoid carbonated drinks, preserved/packaged foods, and dry or cold items.
  • Prefer warming, easy-to-digest meals.
  • Balance activity: get daily gentle exercise without overexertion.
  • Low-impact options: walking, swimming, yoga.
  • Maintain an optimal body weight.
  • Do not withhold natural urges (e.g., urination, gas, burping).

Some Home Remedies

  • Morning massage of stiff/painful joints with warm sesame oil to improve circulation and reduce stiffness.
  • Soak 1 tsp fenugreek in 1 cup water overnight; mix and drink in the morning.
  • Ginger tea: simmer 10–12 slices fresh ginger in ~2 quarts water for 5 minutes, then steep 10–15 minutes; sip warm through the day.
