Oligospermia

Low sperm count (<20 million/ml) is a common factor in male infertility. Ayurveda compares it with Napunsakata and focuses on balancing Pitta and nourishing Shukra Dhatu.

Definition

Oligospermia is a condition where semen has a low sperm concentration (<20 million/ml), commonly linked to male infertility.

Causes

  • Obstruction of sperm flow (testicular trauma, vasectomy).
  • Scarring from surgery, infection, or STDs.
  • Reduced sperm production from varicoceles, hormonal disorders, testicular diseases, obesity.
  • Stress, smoking, alcohol, drugs, certain medications, toxins, malnutrition, low weight.
  • STDs such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.

Symptoms

The main symptom is persistently low sperm count.

Ayurvedic View

Ayurveda compares Oligospermia to Napunsakata (impotency). Main causes include Beejopghat (low sperm quantity), old age, and Kshaj (excessive loss of Shukra Dhatu). The primary dosha involved is Pitta, whose imbalance leads to depletion of Shukra.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice

  • Maintain 3 days gap between ejaculations for higher sperm density.
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol, and substances that reduce sperm quality.
  • Exercise regularly and maintain healthy body weight.
  • Eat low-fat, high-protein diet with vegetables and whole grains.
  • Avoid bitter, astringent, spicy foods; reduce caffeine.
  • Wear loose cotton underwear, avoid heat, saunas, hot baths.
  • Reduce stress with yoga, meditation; massage with Ksheerbala oil to improve circulation.

Some Home Remedies

  • Boil 1 tsp garlic paste in 1 glass milk for 15–20 min; drink once daily.
  • Take 2 dried dates, 2 almonds, 2 pistachios, ¼ tsp quince seeds with milk at bedtime.
  • Take 1 tsp each licorice root powder, honey, and ghee twice daily with milk.
