Leucoderma (Vitiligo)

Leucoderma, often overlapping with vitiligo, involves loss of skin pigment (melanin) leading to sharply defined light or white patches. Course varies—patches may slowly spread, remain stable, or respond to treatment. Supportive care focuses on skin protection and digestive balance alongside your dermatologist’s plan.

Overview

Leucoderma / vitiligo presents as depigmented, well‑defined patches that may occur on the face, hands, feet, around joints or body openings; hair overlying patches may turn gray (poliosis). Sunburn risk increases in affected areas—use broad‑spectrum protection.

Symptoms

  • Light/white patches on skin; sometimes symmetrical.
  • Change in hair color over patches (eyelashes/eyebrows/scalp beard).
  • Sensitivity to sun on depigmented areas.

Consult a dermatologist for diagnosis—other conditions can mimic vitiligo/leucoderma.

Ayurvedic Perspective (Supportive)

Classical texts describe leucoderma in relation to Pitta doṣa imbalance, particularly Bhrājaka Pitta (skin coloration). Accumulated āma (metabolic toxins) and involvement of deeper tissues— Rasa (plasma), Rakta (blood), Māṃsa (muscle) and Lasikā (lymph)—are noted. Supportive care aims to pacify aggravated doṣas and rekindle Agni (digestive fire) while nourishing the skin.

Note: Medical treatments (topicals, phototherapy, etc.) are guided by your dermatologist; supportive measures do not replace them.

Diet & Lifestyle

  • Favor light, freshly cooked meals; include bitter vegetables (e.g., bitter gourd) and green leafy vegetables.
  • Avoid viruddhāhāra (contradictory food combos), e.g., fish with milk; limit very sour/salty and hard‑to‑digest foods.
  • Maintain regular meals and adequate sleep; include gentle stress‑management (breathwork, walking).
  • Protect depigmented skin from sun with clothing and shade; use doctor‑recommended sunscreen.

Some Home Remedies (Comfort)

  • Ginger: small amounts of fresh ginger juice with warm water may support circulation and digestion.
  • Turmeric & oil: traditional external application (turmeric mixed in a carrier like mustard oil) is sometimes used. Discontinue if irritation occurs.
  • Bakuchi (Psoralea) preparations: classical texts mention Bakuchi for skin coloration; however, it can be photosensitizing. Use only under qualified supervision with patch‑testing and clear sun‑exposure guidance.

Always seek individualized advice; discontinue any topical that stings/burns or causes redness.
