Ischaemic Heart Disease (Coronary Artery Disease)

Narrowing of the coronary arteries reduces blood flow to the heart muscle, causing chest discomfort, breathlessness, or fatigue—sometimes silent. Ayurveda relates some patterns to Hṛdroga with roles for disturbed Agni, Āma, and doṣa imbalance affecting the srotas (circulatory channels).

Overview

Ischaemic heart disease (IHD) arises when plaque narrows the coronary arteries. Episodes can present as stable angina, acute coronary syndromes, or silent ischaemia. Prevention focuses on risk-factor control and heart- friendly routines along with medical care.

Risk Factors

  • High blood pressure, high LDL/low HDL, diabetes, central obesity
  • Smoking/tobacco exposure; sedentary lifestyle
  • Diets high in trans fats/refined sugars; excess alcohol
  • Family history, increasing age; high stress, poor sleep

Symptoms

  • Chest pressure/tightness (angina), radiating to arm, neck, jaw, or back
  • Shortness of breath, cold sweats, nausea, unusual fatigue
  • Some people (e.g., with diabetes) may have atypical or minimal pain

Emergency Signs

Sudden severe chest discomfort, breathlessness, fainting, or new confusion—seek emergency care immediately.

Ayurvedic Perspective (Supportive)

Classical texts describe cardiac disorders under Hṛdroga. Potential contributors include impaired Agni and accumulation of Āma, disturbing Vāta–Pitta–Kapha balance and the srotas related to circulation (notably Rasa and Rakta dhātus). Supportive care emphasizes balanced digestion, channel care, and mind–heart calming routines; it complements—not replaces—cardiology care.

Diet & Lifestyle

  • Heart-friendly plate: vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fruits; minimize deep-fried and refined foods.
  • Prefer warm, simply cooked meals; limit excess salt and added sugars.
  • Regular activity as advised; stress-care (breath practices, meditation), adequate sleep.
  • Tobacco cessation; moderate or no alcohol per clinician guidance.

Some Home Remedies (Comfort)

  • Warm water sips with mild spices (e.g., cumin/coriander) after meals.
  • Daily routine: gentle morning walk; calming evening wind-down.
  • Mind–heart support practices (as appropriate and cleared by clinician).

Chest pain or acute symptoms require urgent medical assessment—do not delay.
