Overview
IBS is a functional gut disorder characterized by abdominal pain associated with altered stools and bloating—
often without visible inflammation on routine tests. Patterns vary (constipation-predominant, diarrhea-
predominant, or mixed), and symptoms can wax and wane.
Causes
Contributors may include stress/anxiety, post-infectious changes, food intolerances, caffeine/alcohol excess,
irregular meals, and disrupted sleep. From an Ayurvedic lens, disturbed Agni with Āma and doṣa imbalance
can influence symptoms.
Symptoms
- Abdominal pain/cramps and bloating
- Constipation and/or diarrhea; change in stool form
- Nausea, loss of appetite, headache, fatigue (some individuals)
Ayurvedic Perspective (Supportive)
Ayurveda groups similar presentations under Grahani. Management focuses on calming aggravated doṣas,
kindling balanced Agni, supporting the gut–mind axis, and assisting elimination of Āma where present.
Stress-care routines are typically emphasized.
Supportive measures complement, not replace, professional medical diagnosis and care.
Diet & Lifestyle
- Prefer warm, simple meals; regular timings; adequate hydration.
- Reduce personal triggers (e.g., excess caffeine/alcohol; gas-forming foods if sensitive).
- Include vegetables, suitable fruit, and, if tolerated, yogurt/curd with spices (e.g., cumin).
- Mind–gut support: gentle activity, breath practices, sleep hygiene.
Some Home Remedies (Comfort)
- Ginger tea or small pieces of ginger before meals (if suitable).
- Bedtime: 1 tsp psyllium husk (Isabgol) with half cup yogurt/curd (if appropriate for you).
- Warm water with roasted fennel/cumin infusions after meals.
Seek care for weight loss, blood in stools, fever, persistent night symptoms, or new severe pain.
