Interstitial Cystitis (IC / Bladder Pain Syndrome)

A chronic bladder condition with pelvic pain/pressure and urinary urgency–frequency. In Ayurveda, patterns can reflect aggravated Vāta (especially Apāna Vāta) with Pitta involvement. Supportive care focuses on calming doṣas, soothing tissues, routines, and trigger awareness—alongside your clinician’s plan.

Overview

Interstitial cystitis (IC), also called bladder pain syndrome (BPS), presents with pelvic pain/pressure and urinary urgency–frequency, often without infection. The bladder wall may be inflamed and sensitive; symptoms can flare with diet, stress, or menstrual cycles in some individuals.

Symptoms

  • Pelvic/bladder pain or pressure; tenderness in pelvis/perineum
  • Urgency and frequent urination; reduced bladder capacity
  • Burning/discomfort with urination; pain with intercourse
  • In men: discomfort in penis or scrotum
  • Flares near menses (some women); stress may worsen symptoms

Ayurvedic Perspective (Supportive)

Ayurveda often associates IC with aggravated Vāta (notably Apāna Vāta) and Pitta. Pain reflects Vāta, while burning/irritation reflects Pitta. Accumulated āmā (toxins) in the pelvic tract can aggravate symptoms; classical descriptions sometimes refer to patterns akin to Ushṇa Vāta.

Supportive measures complement, not replace, urologic/gynecologic evaluation and care.

Diet & Lifestyle

  • Trial of bladder-friendly foods; reduce individual triggers (e.g., aged cheeses, chocolate, deep-fried/heavy foods).
  • Prefer warm, simple meals; include vegetables, whole grains, fresh dairy if suitable, and almonds.
  • Hydrate steadily; avoid irritants and very spicy/sour items if they worsen symptoms.
  • Gentle routines: stress reduction, breath practices, pelvic floor–friendly movement.

Some Home Remedies (Comfort)

  • Soothing warm compress over lower abdomen (avoid excess heat if inflamed).
  • Warm water with mild herbal support if appropriate (consult clinician/herbalist).
  • Light abhyanga-style oiling of lower abdomen/pelvis followed by a warm shower.

Seek urgent care for severe pain, fever, visible blood in urine, or urinary retention.
