Headache

Headache is a symptom, not a disease. Common drivers include migraine, tension-type headache, sinus issues, vision strain, sleep problems, dehydration, and stress. Proper evaluation helps match care to the cause.

Overview

Headaches can arise from many factors, including high blood pressure, insomnia, eye strain, sinusitis, hunger, anemia, loud noise, poor lighting, emotional strain, overwork, constipation, and gas. In classical descriptions (Ayurveda: shirehshool), patterns differ by the dominant body energies involved.

Urgent red flags — seek care now

  • “Worst headache of life,” sudden thunderclap onset.
  • New headache with fever, stiff neck, confusion, weakness, slurred speech, vision loss, or after head injury.
  • New/worsening headache in pregnancy or with cancer/immunosuppression.

Causes

From a traditional lens, impaired digestion and stress can aggravate Vata/Kapha and later Pitta, contributing to pain, nausea, or burning sensations. Modern contributors include migraine biology, muscle tension, sinus disease, refractive errors, and sleep disruption.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the head, sometimes radiating to neck and shoulders.
  • Quality can be throbbing, pressure-like, cutting/penetrating, or burning.
  • May include nausea, sensitivity to light/sound, or sinus congestion.

Evaluation & Care

A clinician may review triggers, sleep, vision, blood pressure, sinus/neurologic signs, and check for medication overuse. Care can include trigger management, hydration, sleep regularity, vision correction, sinus treatment, and evidence-based migraine/tension-type therapies.

Personalized treatment depends on the specific headache type and health history.

Ayurvedic Perspective (Supportive)

Ayurveda attributes headaches to sensitive nerves and impaired digestion with buildup of ama (impurities). Supportive measures aim to balance aggravated energies and restore digestion. These approaches can complement (not replace) medical care—discuss herbs with your clinician.

Diet & Lifestyle

  • Favor warm, easily digestible foods: steamed veggies, soups, porridges, brown rice, whole-wheat.
  • Fruits such as apples, papaya, mango, grapes, and pears.
  • Daytime: buttermilk, salads, and boiled rice sautéed with cinnamon/cumin/garlic/asafoetida.
  • Handful of almonds/walnuts with raisins as tolerated.
  • Avoid refined, oily, spicy, cold, stale foods; avoid yogurt at night.
  • Work in focused blocks with short breaks; keep a regular, restorative sleep schedule.
  • Protect from harsh sun/heat/cold; use a hat/umbrella as needed.

Home Care Ideas

  • For burning sensation: apply a cool paste of sandalwood powder with rose water to the forehead (avoid eyes/irritated skin).
  • For sinus-related pain: consider steam inhalation; discuss additives (e.g., vinegar) with a clinician if sensitive.
  • Topical: ¼ tsp clove powder with 1 tsp cinnamon oil—apply to affected area 20–30 minutes, then wash off if used; discontinue if irritation occurs.
