Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can affect the urethra, cervix, rectum, and throat. It spreads through sexual contact and may cause burning urination and discharge, or be asymptomatic. It requires prompt evaluation and antibiotics prescribed by a clinician. Partners should be tested and treated, and sex should be avoided until treatment is complete and symptoms resolve.

Gonorrhoea — Prameha Upadrava (contextual)

Infective involvement of mūtra-mārga (urinary passages); pacifying heat (Pitta) and clearing āma are emphasized alongside clinical care.

Overview

Gonorrhoea is a common STI. In males, thick yellow/green urethral discharge and burning urination are classic. Females may notice increased discharge or pain with urination; some have no symptoms. Without treatment, it can cause complications including pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and disseminated infection.

Symptoms

  • Burning or pain while passing urine; urethral or vaginal discharge.
  • Pelvic or lower abdominal pain; testicular or scrotal pain/swelling.
  • Rectal discomfort/discharge or sore throat after exposure.
  • Sometimes no symptoms—testing is still important after exposure.

When to Seek Urgent Care

  • Severe pelvic/abdominal pain, high fever, vomiting, or very ill feeling.
  • Testicular pain/swelling or severe rectal pain.
  • Rash with joint pain/swelling (possible disseminated infection).
  • Pregnancy with suspected infection.

Testing & Treatment

Diagnosis is typically by NAAT (swab/urine). Treatment is with antibiotics prescribed by a clinician. Complete the full course, abstain from sex until cleared, and ensure recent partners are informed, tested, and treated. Re-testing is often advised to confirm cure and check for co-infections.

Safety & Prevention

  • Use condoms/dental dams consistently and correctly.
  • Limit number of partners and consider regular STI screening.
  • Avoid sexual contact until treatment is complete and symptoms resolve.

Ayurvedic Perspective (Supportive)

Traditional routines may support comfort—hydration, easily digestible warm meals, adequate rest, and gentle stress-reduction practices. These measures can complement care but do not replace evidence-based antibiotic therapy for gonorrhoea. Discuss any herbs/supplements with your clinician to avoid interactions.
