Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a tendency to recurrent, unprovoked seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Causes vary by age (perinatal injury, infections, structural lesions, genetic factors, head trauma). Proper evaluation guides safe, effective care.

Overview

Seizures can range from brief lapses of awareness to generalized convulsions. Triggers may include sleep deprivation, missed medicines, alcohol excess, or flashing lights (photosensitivity in some). Seek urgent care for first-time seizures, prolonged seizures (>5 minutes), repeated seizures without recovery, injury, or pregnancy-associated seizures.

Ayurvedic Perspective (Supportive)

Traditional texts discuss seizure-like conditions with emphasis on balancing doṣas, nourishing the nervous system, and reducing aggravating factors. These measures are supportive alongside neurologist-led treatment and do not replace anti-seizure medications when prescribed.

Medication adherence is critical. Never stop or change doses without clinician guidance.

Daily Care & Safety

  • Take medicines on schedule; maintain regular sleep; limit alcohol; manage stress.
  • During a seizure: place on side, cushion head, remove nearby hazards; do not restrain or place objects in mouth.
  • Discuss driving, heights, water safety, and machinery use with your clinician.

Some Home Remedies (Comfort)

  • Gentle routines, balanced meals, and hydration; avoid known personal triggers.
  • Relaxation practices (breathwork, meditation) if approved by your clinician.

Avoid unverified herbal mixes that claim to “cure” epilepsy; coordinate any supplements with your doctor.
