Overview
The conjunctiva is the thin, transparent membrane over the white of the eye and inner eyelids. Irritation
or infection can inflame this layer, leading to red, gritty, watery eyes; allergic forms often itch, while
bacterial forms can cause thicker discharge.
Common Symptoms
- Redness, burning/irritation, watery or mucoid discharge
- Crusting or “sticky” eyelids on waking
- Itching (more typical with allergy), light sensitivity
- Gritty/foreign body sensation
Ayurvedic Perspective (Supportive)
Classical approaches emphasise balancing aggravated doṣas and gentle routines to soothe ocular tissues—
complementary to ophthalmic evaluation. Internal cleansing and topical applications referenced in texts
should only be used if advised by a qualified clinician; avoid unapproved eye drops/oils.
Supportive care does not replace medical diagnosis or prescribed treatment, especially with pain or vision change.
Care & Hygiene Tips
- Wash hands frequently; avoid touching/rubbing the eyes.
- Use a clean, lukewarm or cool compress for comfort; one cloth per eye.
- Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup during active symptoms; replace/clean lens cases.
- Do not share towels, pillows, or eye cosmetics; change pillowcases often.
- Follow clinician guidance on lubricating drops or prescribed medications; complete advised course.
When to Seek Urgent Care
Severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity, decreased vision, contact lens–related redness, trauma/chemical
exposure, or symptoms not improving with initial care warrant prompt ophthalmic evaluation.
