Chronic rhinitis refers to long-standing nasal irritation/inflammation. In practice, duration and pattern vary; many people report symptoms >4 days/week for >4 weeks at a time.
Colds are a common trigger; allergies, irritants, and weather changes can also contribute.
Classical descriptions relate rhinitis (duṣṭa pratishyāya) to imbalances in Pitta and Kapha. Heating, mucus-like toxins are described as accumulating in respiratory channels, contributing to congestion and irritation. Supportive care aims to pacify Pitta/Kapha and support clear breathing.
General emphasis is on pacifying Kapha and Pitta, reducing irritants, and improving routine.
Prefer foods that do not aggravate Pitta/Kapha. Avoid fried/oily, very sour, and very sweet foods; citrus, chutneys, sauces, fermented items, mustard, vinegar; refined white-flour products (bread, cakes, pastries, pizza); fast/processed foods, cola drinks, tomatoes; tea/coffee, alcohol, and smoking; very cold/frozen/heavy foods.
Favour naturally sweet, bland, and more alkaline foods: grains, freshly boiled rice, pasta, beans, whole-grain breads, milk gently boiled with spices, fresh juices, vegetables, and fruits.
