Chronic Laryngitis

Long-standing irritation or inflammation of the voice box (larynx) can cause hoarseness, vocal fatigue, throat clearing, and cough. Gentle voice care, hydration, and trigger control can ease day-to-day symptoms.

Overview

Chronic laryngitis refers to persistent inflammation/irritation of the larynx (voice box), commonly presenting with ongoing hoarseness and vocal strain. Triggers often include reflux, irritants/smoke, allergies, infections, or voice overuse.

Causes

  • Voice overuse/misuse (prolonged loud speaking/singing)
  • Irritants: tobacco smoke, pollution, chemical fumes, very dry air
  • Reflux/heartburn (stomach acid irritating the larynx)
  • Allergies or lingering post-viral irritation

Symptoms

  • Hoarseness, breathy/rough voice, reduced vocal range
  • Frequent throat clearing, sensation of a lump in throat
  • Dry cough, vocal fatigue after talking
  • Occasional sore throat or dryness

Seek medical care for red flags: difficulty breathing, noisy breathing (stridor), blood in sputum, or persistent hoarseness > 3–4 weeks.

Ayurvedic Perspective (Supportive)

Traditional descriptions relate chronic throat irritation to imbalances of Vata and/or Pitta, with dryness or heat affecting vocal tissues. Supportive care aims to soothe tissues, maintain moisture, and calm irritation—complementary to ENT guidance.

Diet & Lifestyle

  • Hydrate well (frequent sips of warm water); use a humidifier in very dry environments.
  • Limit smoke exposure, strong fumes, and very spicy/acidic meals—especially late at night if reflux is present.
  • Practice voice hygiene: avoid shouting/whispering; take “voice breaks”; consider microphone use when teaching.
  • Gentle steam inhalation (not scalding), nasal saline rinses if advised, and regular sleep.

Some Home Remedies (Comfort)

  • Warm saline gargles 1–2× daily to soothe the throat.
  • Warm herbal infusions (e.g., ginger-tulsi) with a small amount of honey for adults (avoid honey in children < 1 year).
  • Avoid habitual throat clearing—sip water or try a gentle swallow instead.
