Chronic Gastritis

Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach’s mucosal lining. Chronic forms can cause daily discomfort, indigestion, and a sense of weakness. Supportive diet and routine changes complement medical care.

Definition

Gastritis refers to inflammation of the stomach’s mucus lining. People with chronic gastritis may feel uneasy or uncomfortable through much of the day, sometimes with a persistent sense of weakness.

Causes

Common contributors include excessive alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, sour/spicy/acidic foods, and refined white-flour products. Stress, anger, and heat exposure may aggravate symptoms.

Symptoms

  • Indigestion (dyspepsia), heartburn, and abdominal pain
  • Hiccups, loss of appetite, nausea
  • Vomiting (occasionally with “coffee-ground” material)
  • Dark stools

Ayurvedic Perspective (Supportive)

In Ayurveda, chronic gastritis aligns with Urdhvaga Āmla Pitta, often linked to aggravated Pitta from dietary and lifestyle factors. Aggravated Pitta may impair digestive fire and promote formation of heating āma (toxins), increasing gastric discomfort and gas.

Supportive care focuses on reducing aggravated energies and restoring digestive fire through cooling, Pitta-pacifying diet and calming routines. Stress-reduction measures can also help comfort.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice

  • On flare days, prefer warm water and easy fruits (e.g., grapes, apples, oranges, watermelon) if tolerated.
  • Avoid coffee, carbonated and alcoholic beverages.
  • Limit processed/fermented foods; avoid heavy, very sour/salty/spicy gravies.
  • Practice gentle daily movement; Prāṇāyāma can be helpful.
  • Hydrate well (around 8–9 glasses/day as personally suitable).

Home Remedies

  • Equal parts powdered fennel, licorice root, basil leaf, and coriander seed; take ½ tsp with ½ tsp rock candy 15 minutes before lunch and dinner.
  • Mix equal parts rock candy, fennel, and green cardamom; for heartburn, stir 1 tsp into a glass of cold milk.
  • Chew 2–3 small pieces of ginger with a pinch of salt before meals for quick relief.
