Overview
Cervical spondylosis refers to degenerative changes in the neck vertebrae and discs. It can cause
neck pain and stiffness, headaches, vertigo on bending forward, and sometimes tingling or numbness
in the arms. In Ayurveda, related presentations are described under Grivasandhigatvata,
often associated with aggravated Vata and posture strain.
Causes
Tissue wear with age, repetitive strain, and poor ergonomics are common contributors. In an Ayurvedic
lens, factors that aggravate Vata—very dry/cold foods, irregular meals, late nights, smoking,
and excessive physical/mental exertion—may worsen symptoms.
Symptoms
- Neck pain radiating to shoulder/arm, stiffness, and crepitus (cracking sounds)
- Headache or vertigo on forward flexion
- Numbness or altered sensation in the upper limbs
- Systemic features like indigestion, poor sleep, dry skin (varies by individual)
Ayurvedic Perspective (Supportive)
Management emphasizes pacifying aggravated Vata, improving digestion, and gentle tissue
nourishment. In integrative settings, this aligns with ergonomic corrections, graded activity,
and stress modulation.
Panchakarma and oil-based therapies are sometimes used in supportive care
settings; always coordinate with a qualified practitioner and your spine/orthopedic doctor.
Note: Severe or progressive neurologic signs need prompt medical assessment.
Diet & Lifestyle
- Prefer warm, freshly prepared, easy-to-digest meals; include soups, ghee in moderation, milk, and nuts if tolerated.
- Limit very dry, very cold, and gas-forming foods (e.g., large portions of refined flour, beans) if they worsen symptoms.
- Adopt ergonomic posture; take frequent micro-breaks and gentle mobility breaks during desk work.
- Prioritize regular sleep; consider breathwork/meditation and gentle yoga.
- Under guidance, Dhanurāsana and Ujjāyī Prāṇāyāma may help comfort.
Some Home Remedies (Comfort)
- Lukewarm sesame oil massage to the neck/shoulders followed by warm compress may ease stiffness.
- 2–3 raw garlic buds with water on an empty stomach is a traditional tip for some; check tolerance first.
- Bedtime mix: equal parts dried ginger, celery seed, and cumin seed powder with a pinch of rock salt.
Home measures are supportive only; avoid forceful manipulation or any practice that increases pain.
