Bronchial Asthma

A chronic inflammatory airway condition marked by episodic wheeze, chest tightness, cough and breathlessness. Ayurveda offers supportive care—diet, routines and therapies—alongside guideline-based medical treatment.

Definition

Bronchial asthma (Tamak Śvāsa) is a chronic, intermittent inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by episodes of dyspnoea, cough, airflow obstruction and wheeze. Psychological stress often aggravates symptoms.

Causes

In Ayurvedic language, aggravated kapha accumulates and narrows airways; disturbed vata worsens spasms and variability. Triggers include cold/damp climate, stale/cold food, heavy/indigestible meals, allergens/irritants, infections and the build-up of āma (toxins/mucus) in channels.

Common Symptoms

  • Paroxysmal breathlessness and wheezing, often worse at night/early morning
  • Chest tightness, prolonged expiration, audible breathing, fatigue with exhalation
  • Persistent cough; preference for upright posture during attacks
  • Dry mouth, forehead perspiration; desire for warmth

Ayurvedic View

Care starts with improving digestion and clearing āma. Herbal measures then help liquefy and mobilize kapha, allow balanced movement of vata, and support immunity. Depending on the person, physicians may use deepana-pācana (kindling & digestion), gentle śodhana where appropriate, and rasāyana tonics—always under supervision and in coordination with inhalers/modern therapy.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice

  • Avoid smoking; reduce exposure to dust, cold air and known allergens.
  • Prefer freshly cooked warm meals at regular times; sip warm water or herbal teas.
  • Eat below full capacity; favour light, digestible foods (mung soup, rice, steamed veg, ginger).
  • Limit heavy/cold items: excess dairy, deep-fried foods, pickles, chilled drinks, beans that cause gas.
  • Regular moderate exercise and breathing practice as advised by your clinician.

Some Home Remedies

  • ½ tsp freshly grated ginger simmered in a cup of milk with ¼ tsp turmeric, taken twice daily.
  • Ginger tea with 2–3 crushed garlic cloves.
  • Chest massage with warm sesame oil plus a pinch of salt, followed by steam inhalation, to loosen phlegm.

Home tips can be supportive but are not a replacement for prescribed controllers/relievers.

Safety

  • Use your reliever inhaler for acute symptoms as prescribed; seek urgent care if not improving.
  • Have an action plan with your clinician; do not stop controller medicines without advice.
  • Inform your doctor about any herbs/supplements to avoid interactions.
