Azoospermia (Nil Sperm Count)

Azoospermia means semen contains no measurable sperm. Causes include obstructive problems in the reproductive tract or non-obstructive issues with sperm production. Ayurveda supports evaluation with diet, lifestyle, stress balance, and targeted therapies—always alongside appropriate urological care.

Overview

Azoospermia is the absence of sperm in semen. It can be:

  • Obstructive: blockages in the epididymis/vas deferens ejaculatory pathway.
  • Non-obstructive: reduced/absent sperm production due to testicular or hormonal causes.

Evaluation typically includes semen analysis (×2), hormone profile (FSH/LH/testosterone), scrotal ultrasound, and, where indicated, genetic tests (e.g., Y-microdeletions) and biopsy—guided by a urologist/andrologist.

Ayurvedic View

Nourish shukra dhatu → support ojas → pacify aggravated vata/pitta → steady daily rhythm.

Classical texts link poor semen quality with depletion of shukra dhatu, aggravated vata, excessive heat (pitta), and erratic routines. Care emphasizes nourishment, cooling where appropriate, stress regulation, sleep hygiene, and stage-appropriate herbal/rasayana support under supervision.

Common Causes

  • Congenital absence or obstruction of vas deferens; post-infection scarring.
  • Varicocele, testicular injury, torsion, or prior surgery.
  • Endocrine factors: hypogonadism, hyperprolactinemia, thyroid disorders.
  • Heat/toxin exposures, anabolic steroids, some medications/chemotherapy.
  • Genetic causes: Klinefelter, Y-chromosome microdeletions (urology team evaluates).

Diet & Lifestyle

  • Regular meals: warm, freshly cooked; include ghee (as appropriate), milk/almond (if tolerated), dates, black sesame, soaked almonds, shatavari-spiced milk at night where suitable.
  • Favour cooling/pacifying foods if heat signs: pomegranate, amla, coconut, ridge gourd, barley.
  • Reduce smoking, alcohol, excess caffeine; avoid hot tubs/sauna and tight heat-retaining clothing.
  • Moderate exercise + pelvic blood-flow practices; manage stress (breathwork, yoga nidra, time in nature).
  • Sleep 7–8 hours; keep consistent schedule; limit late-night screens.
